Frequently asked questions

What is Shabu Shabu?

Shabu Shabu is a Japanese style of hot pot cooking where thinly sliced meat, vegetables, and noodles are cooked in a seasoned broth. The name comes from the sound of swishing the meat in the pot as it cooks. Typically, each diner has their own pot of simmering broth and cooks their own ingredients to their desired level of doneness. It is a fun and interactive dining experience that is perfect for sharing with friends and family. Shabu Shabu is known for its fresh ingredients and the ability to customize your meal with a variety of meats, vegetables, and dipping sauces.

Where can I find Shabu Shabu in San Francisco?

San Francisco is home to a number of restaurants that offer Shabu Shabu on their menu. Some popular spots include Shabu House in Japantown, Umami Shabu Shabu in the Inner Sunset, and Shabu Club in the Richmond District. These restaurants offer a range of options for Shabu Shabu lovers, from traditional beef and vegetable combinations to more unique offerings like seafood and premium wagyu beef. Each restaurant has its own twist on the classic dish, so it's worth trying a few different spots to find your favorite.

How do I eat Shabu Shabu?

Eating Shabu Shabu is a simple and enjoyable experience. First, you will be served a platter of thinly sliced meats, vegetables, and noodles. Next, you will have a pot of simmering broth at your table. To enjoy your meal, simply take a piece of meat or vegetable with your chopsticks and swish it in the broth until it is cooked to your liking. Then, dip it in your choice of sauce and enjoy! Be sure to save some broth towards the end of your meal to make a delicious noodle soup by adding in any remaining ingredients.

Is Shabu Shabu healthy?

One of the benefits of Shabu Shabu is that it can be a healthy dining option. Since you are cooking your own food in a broth, you have control over how much oil and seasoning is used. Additionally, Shabu Shabu is a great way to incorporate a variety of vegetables and lean meats into your meal. You can also choose healthier broth options, such as vegetable broth or low-sodium broth. Just be mindful of the dipping sauces, as they can add extra calories and sodium to your meal.
